Understanding spice manufacturing and processing

Spices play a very important role as preservatives, flavour enhancers, and therapeutic agents. The quality of spices is intrinsically linked to the processing techniques employed. This newsletter will explore the key stages of spice processing, from cleaning and grinding to bulk storage and packaging.

Key Processing Stages

Unloading of Raw Materials

Bulk jumbo bags containing raw spices are unloaded into process hoppers using specialized unloading systems, such as those provided by Aishin. These systems ensure complete discharge of bags into the hopper for spill-free operations.

Cleaning

Raw materials are transferred to hoppers equipped with magnetic separators to remove ferrous particles. Magnetic separators from Aishin are commonly used in this stage, as they are designed to effectively filter out ferrous contaminants while ensuring smooth material flow.

Grinding

Spices are ground using low-temperature or cryogenic methods to preserve colour, fragrance, and flavour. Hanningfield mills are often used for this purpose, as they can produce fine particles while minimizing heat generation for very high production volumes.

Sieving

To ensure uniform particle size, spices are screened using vibrosifters or centrifugal sifters. Gansons vibrosifters and Hanningfield centrifugal sifters are popular choices, as they offer high efficiency and precision in separating particles based on size. Sieving can be done in a close loop system, further enhancing the efficiency of the process.

Drying

Drying is a critical step in spice processing, as it removes excess moisture and prevents spoilage. Drying equipment such as conveyor dryers or Gansons fluidized bed dryers can be used to efficiently remove moisture from spices without compromising their quality.

Transfer

BFM sleeves are used for dust-free and spillage-free transfer of spices between machines. BFM sleeves provide a secure and hygienic connection that prevents material loss and contamination.

Material Handling

Hygienic and sanitary pneumatic transfer systems with minimal mechanical contact parts ensure safe and efficient material handling. Volkamnn transfer systems are known for their efficiency and hygiene, as they minimize the risk of contamination and reduce downtime. They not only accelerate the process but ensure zero segregation of spices.

Metered Transfer

Rotary air lock valves and scraper valves facilitate precise and sanitary transfer of spices. Aishin rotary air lock valves and Aishin scraper valves are used to provide accurate metering and prevent product clogging and loss.

Mixing

Spices are mixed using low, high, or medium shear mixers to achieve uniform blends and incorporate additives. Gansons mixers offer a range of shear options to suit different spice types and processing requirements.

Bulk Storage

Sanitary batch storage in steel vessels with air sweep nozzles ensures complete discharge without damaging the storage vessels. Silos and hoppers are often used for bulk storage, as they provide a safe and efficient way to store large quantities of spices.

The Importance of Quality Control of the manufacturing equipment

Throughout the spice processing process, quality control is paramount. This includes usage of sanitary equipment, adherence to hygiene standards, and the use of advanced equipment to ensure product consistency and safety. By using high quality machines and control processes measures, businesses can maintain the integrity of their spices and meet the highest standards of safety and purity.

Spice processing is a complex process that requires careful attention to detail. By selecting the right equipment and implementing best practices, spice manufacturers and processors can ensure that their products are safe, flavourful, and of the highest quality.
